Why did God allow Charlie Kirk to die?

By Kristen Zuray

As Wednesday dawned, it appeared that it would be a usual day. We went about our normal routines unaware that by the end of the day nothing would be normal, again. The world was once more sent into a state of disbelief  as word spread about Charlie Kirk’s assasination. Grief was poured out and expressed on every media outlet and social media platform. Some expressed anger, some inspired, some wept, while others disrespectfully cheered.

Have you felt tempted to be angry with God? To ask Him why? For the past several days I’ve pondered this question, “Why did God allow Charlie Kirk to die?”. I’ve watched the marches and the vigils that have transpired throughout the world, and therein lies the answer. Charlie stood for God’s truth saturated in love and grace. He wasn’t just on a mission to make America a better place, he was also on an eternal mission to flood the gates of heaven with as many souls that chose to listen and to accept. So, why did he die if he was doing so much good?

The Christian faith explains that there is a war of good and evil. The purpose of this battle is to either destroy the very people who are made in the image of God or to redeem and set free the very people God created and loves.

For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. -  Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)

According to Ephesians, we are not in a battle against Tyler Robinson, Charlie’s shooter, nor are we in a battle with those who are spreading hate speeches about the event. We are in a battle with the unseen demonic spirits that are influencing these people. Hate and murder is generated by the demonic. When people CHOOSE to turn away from God, they become merely puppets in the hand of the demonic. Charlie was having an eternal impact and Satan had to take him out. BUT….

Here’s the beauty. Charlie loved God. Because of his faith, God promises that He will turn everything to good, even an assasination.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28 (NLT)

What is the miracle that we are seeing already in the wake of his death? A world wide movement to stand against the tyranny of moral debauchery that has plagued this country for years. Christians have been praying for a revival, maybe we are seeing those prayers being answered. Charlie would have wanted it that way. Any true believer would want to be “broken and spilled out” if they knew it meant that more people would be set eternally free. Paul said it best.

For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. - Philippians 1:21-24 (NLT)

Why is dying better? Because as believers we get to go home. We get to see Jesus! Who wouldn’t want that? As Christians, we also know that while we are here on earth, we need to be living examples of Jesus. What I fear though is that many have been silenced, too afraid to speak out for fear of losing their jobs, being cancelled, or losing their churches, etc. Moral issues have been made into political issues, resulting in the silencing of good people. Adapt or be persecuted. A great divide has been growing. Someone once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Evil has been unleashed and left to run rampant throughout our schools, churches, and society. Good people have tried to stand up against it, but not enough good people. When God was looking for someone faithful to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem, He lamented these words,

I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one. - Ezekiel 22:30 (NLT)

God made a similar cry in Isaiah.

Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” - Isaiah 6:8 (NLT)

Charlie and many others have said, “Here am I, Lord, send me.” Is it enough just to have a few people willing to make noise, I wonder? What would happen if believers everywhere raised their hands and said, “I will stand in the gap! Send me!” A gap has been created by Charlie’s death. My prayer is that not just one person steps up but a multitude of people step up and speak truth with grace and love, shedding off the fear of persecution because it is through persecution that revival spreads. There’s the good that God promises, victory over evil. Why did God allow Charlie to die? Because He knew that this event would give people pause to think about the message of Christ Charlie had been promoting.

I’ve had to ask myself, “Does my life point others to Christ?” and “Would my death influence people to Christ?” How about you? Are you willing to stand in the gap for truth? Are you willing to say “Send me?” even if things might get difficult? We are Christ followers first before any political party. Christians, we have been called to be an Esther for a time such as this.

For those who are reading this and may not yet be believers, Charlie lived so that you could have the truth. Jesus died and rose again because He is the Truth that will give you

eternal life with Him. Will you accept Him today?
